Vaea Dang

  • Vaea Dang is a French artist based in the Hudson Valley. Raised in French Polynesia, her island childhood gave her a particular insight into questions of identity, time and sentimental attachment to places, as if nothing was taken for granted, and that one should marvel at the little things.

  • Visual artist, urban sketcher, writer, sculptor sometimes, my main practice is a combination of 2 very different approaches. One one hand, I enjoy creating intricate, detailed works of art. I like to explore mixed techniques, sometimes blending sewing or collage, but regularly returning to crosshatching. Whatever the technique, layer after layer, I build a delicate work of art. I appreciates the need to stand still, as it allows me to notice things I wouldn't if I were rushing through a hectic life. On the other hand, I also like journaling the moments in a less formal format, mixing texts and watercolor or pencil colors drawings to capture the atmosphere, the energy, the memories. I've been journaling my travels and my art journey for more than 10 years, writing most of it when I wasn’t into drawing and then exploring different approaches as my art evolved. The travel sketchbooks are like time travel machines for me. I can open them and bring back all those stories, all those memories. It helps me feel that those moments existed. For real and forever.
