Vivian Todini

  • Originally from downstate, Vivian Todini now resides full-time in Rhinebeck, NY. For her, making and experiencing art, from watercolor painting to monotypes, is a transformative experience, both evocative and life-changing.

  • In all the art media in which I work, I have a penchant for improvised expression and consider my style representative, with an impressionistic cadence.

I work primarily in watercolor where landscapes are my inspiration, including the barns and country architecture that rest on the Hudson Valley grasses and hills. For me, painting in this medium leads to a new exploration every time the brush touches pigment and paper. And, while to the extent that pigment can be controlled, painting with watercolors is consonant with life – full of unexpected gifts and challenges.

In contrast to the transparency of watercolor, I also paint with gouache on mixed media or black paper, experimenting with the paint’s opacity with the intention of being more deliberate and defined in these pieces.

Using oil-based paints, I also make monotypes in which brayer marks establish a rhythm, while a paintbrush and other tools develop the composition. I also experiment with using my ghosts and original prints as a canvas to apply pastel and other media.

My work has been exhibited at the Woodstock School of Art; the Betsy Jacaruso Gallery, where I l study watercolor; the Provincetown Art Museum; the Pelham Center for the Arts; and the Nyack Library.

Currently, I serve on the Board of Directors of the Woodstock School of Art.
