-
Alan Reich is a photographer and cabinetmaker. He graduated from CCNY in 1969. He later studied at Parsons School of Design. His photography is color analog and digital prints
He designs and builds furniture, using exotic and native hardwoods.
-
Alan's woodwork designs reflect the influence of early 20th Century furniture makers including those of the Arts and Crafts, Art Deco and Secessionist movements.
His photography includes abstract designs, street scenes and architectural compositions. He was in Master Classes with Phillipe Halsman and Benedict J. Fernandez. He looks to the work of Walker Evans and Helen Levitt for instruction and inspiration in subject and composition, and locates color and form in commonplace scenes. He shoots mostly 35mm color negatives and makes chromogenic prints.
He has combined his two mediums in a series of folding screens. He does collaborative work with painters, incorporating their work in his furniture.
A selection of Alan's photographs are in his book "What I Saw".
